Dog Car Seat for Large Dogs: How to Choose One That Actually Fits

Most dog car seats on the market are built for toy and small breeds. If your dog weighs 35 lbs or more, the search gets harder: many seats sold as 'large' are thin bolsters that sag under real weight or slide on the first corner. Here is what to check before you buy a dog car seat for a large dog.

1. Go by weight, not by breed label

A breed name tells you very little: two Labradors can differ by 25 lbs. Weigh your dog, then read across. Our Large seat is made for dogs from 35 to 50 lbs, and our XL seat for dogs over 50 lbs. If your dog is between two sizes, take the larger one so it can turn around and lie down.

2. Check how the seat is anchored

A heavy dog moves a seat that is only held by a headrest loop. Look for a seat that anchors to the car itself: metal clips that lock onto your vehicle's LATCH (ISOFIX) anchors, plus adjustable straps with quick-release buckles. Our seats use ISOFIX/LATCH clips and straps together, so the seat stays where you put it under braking and turns.

3. Look for high, padded walls

Walls give a large dog something to lean into and stop it from sliding toward the footwell. A flat mat or thin bolster does neither.

4. A non-slip, waterproof base

Large dogs bring mud, rain and hair. A waterproof base protects your back seat, and a non-slip underside keeps the seat from sliding on leather or fabric.

5. A harness clip, never a collar

The safety clip inside the seat should attach to your dog's harness, never to a collar, so pressure goes on the chest and not the neck.

6. Back seat only

Always install the seat on the back seat. A deploying front airbag is dangerous for a dog, exactly as it is for a child.

7. A cover you can wash

Pick a removable, machine-washable cover. With a big dog you will wash it often.

What our seat is, and is not

TheDogCarSeat is a comfort and containment product: it keeps your dog in one place, sitting up, and stops it from climbing into the front. It is not crash-tested or certified as a restraint system. If your priority is crash protection, ask about certified harnesses and choose one separately.
