Dog Car Seat for Dachshunds: Protecting a Long Back on the Road
Share
Dachshunds love car rides and hate being left behind. But their shape, a long back on short legs, means they need a little more thought in the car than most small dogs.
Which size for a Dachshund?
- Miniature Dachshund (usually 11 lbs or less): our Small seat, for dogs up to 15 lbs.
- Standard Dachshund (usually 16-32 lbs): our Medium seat, for 15 to 35 lbs.
- "Tweenie" (12-15 lbs, between the two): take the Medium. Dachshunds like to lie stretched out, and they're longer than their weight suggests.
- Two Dachshunds: two minis or two smaller standards fit side by side in the XL.
Why a long back changes things
Dachshunds are prone to back problems, and the things that strain a Dachshund's back are exactly what happen in a car: jumping up onto the seat, jumping down onto the pavement, and being thrown sideways on corners. A good setup reduces all three.
- Lift, don't let them jump. Pick your Dachshund up with one hand under the chest and one under the hindquarters, and set it in the seat. Same on the way out.
- High walls on all sides. Padded sides let your dog lean into a turn instead of sliding across the bench.
- A flat, firm base. So it lies straight, not curled into a sagging dip.
- A harness, never a collar. Clip the tether to a harness that spreads the load across the chest.
- Short tether. Long enough to lie down, too short to scramble over the walls.
If your Dachshund has a diagnosed back condition, ask your vet how it should travel.
Car anxiety and barking
Many Dachshunds bark or whine in the car because they can't see anything from the seat. A raised booster puts them at window height. It isn't a cure, but for a lot of Doxies it's the difference between barking the whole trip and watching the world go by. For more, see how to calm an anxious dog in the car.
Other small breeds
Frenchies and Pugs have their own needs, mostly around heat. See dog car seat for French Bulldogs and Pugs and dog car seat for small dogs.
